ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

The academic goal of the Arts Academy Elementary Charter School is to deliver the PA Core Curriculum while embracing frustrational, instructional, and independent literacy levels, differentiating instruction and materials to meet individual needs.

The Arts Academy Elementary Charter School K-5 ELA Curriculum Continuum will ensure that students will:

Learn to read independently

Read critically in all content areas

Read, analyze, and interpret literature

Write clearly and effectively in various formats

Demonstrate speaking and listening skills

Write legibly in manuscript and cursive

“In second grade, students begin to read with greater accuracy and fluency. They conduct more sophisticated word studies and use their decoding skills and expanding sight word bank to read longer, more complex texts - including fables and folktales from diverse cultures. Students recount the stories they read, determining the central message, lesson, or moral and describe how characters respond to major events and challenges. As students read grade level text, they cite textual evidence to support the author’s purpose. They acquire and use grade-appropriate general academic and domain specific vocabulary. Students in second grade deepen written and verbal communication skills. In addition to informational and narrative writing, students create pieces that state their opinions supported with reasons, using linking words to connect ideas and providing a concluding statement or section. Written text becomes more readable throughout second grade as students use grade – appropriate grammar and conventions including plural and proper nouns, prefixes, and suffixes. Students engage in collaborative, respectful discussions about topics and texts. They use technology to record, present, and embellish both written and verbal communication using audio recordings, drawings, or visual displays and digital publishing tools.” (Academic Standards for English Language Arts, PA Department of Education, 2014)

MATHEMATICS

The academic goal of the Arts Academy Elementary Charter School is to deliver the PA Core Curriculum while embracing all levels, differentiating instruction and materials to meet individual needs.

The Arts Academy Elementary Charter School’s Mathematics curriculum embraces the PA Core Standards, ensuring that all students will:

Learn procedural skills and conceptual understandings to ensure children are learning and applying the critical information they need to succeed at higher levels.

Provide students with a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals.

Build the foundation to successfully apply more demanding math concepts and procedures, and move into application.

“The Pennsylvania Core Standards in Mathematics in grades K–5 lay a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. Taken together, these elements support a student’s ability to learn and apply more demanding math concepts and procedures. The middle school and high school standards call on students to practice applying mathematical ways of thinking to real world issues and challenges; they prepare students to think and reason mathematically. Additionally, they set a rigorous definition of college and career readiness by demanding that students develop a depth of understanding and ability to apply mathematics to novel situations, as college students and employees regularly do.” (Academic Standards for Mathematics, PA Department of Education, 2014)
